El Dorado Hills, CA (PRWEB) December 3, 2007Rudy's "Country Store" and Bar-B-Q and the authors of University of Oklahoma Football: An Interactive Guide to the World of Sports have teamed up to raise money for The Bob Stoops Champions Foundation.
Enter the raffle at Rudy's "Country Store" and Bar-B-Q in Norman, OK with a suggested $1 donation to the Champions Foundation. Every time Rudy's receives $250 in donations, they will draw a name and the winner will receive a copy of University of Oklahoma Football autographed by OU Football Head Coach Bob Stoops.
Authors Daniel Brush, David Horne and Marc Maxwell are graduate students at the University of Oklahoma and crafted the concept for their new book series "Sports by the Numbers" while dining at Rudy's "Country Store" and Bar-B-Q in Norman, OK, while enjoying some Real Texas Bar-B-Q and iced tea!
Doug Bates, manager for Rudy's in Norman, OK, is looking forward to the raffle. "This is a great opportunity for our customers to win a really special gift, and we can help raise some money for a good cause at the same time. We see this as a win-win for everyone involved."
Co-author Marc Maxwell agrees. "Coach Stoops was kind enough to write the Foreword to our book and also autograph 100 copies. We're thrilled to work with one of our favorite hangouts, Rudy's, and also give back to Coach Stoops and his Champions Foundation."
The foundation was established in 2000 to assist organizations that help disadvantaged or ill children in the Norman and Oklahoma City areas. In addition to the raffle at Rudy's, a portion of the proceeds from the sale of this book on the Sports by the Numbers website, www.sportsbythenumbers.com , will also be donated to the charity. For those interested in purchasing a copy of the book autographed by Coach Stoops, a limited number of copies are also available on the authors' website.
University of Oklahoma Football, the first book in their Sports by the Numbers series, is composed of ten chapters, each offering one hundred numbered "mini-stories"facts, anomalies, records, coincidences and enthralling lore and triviaeach associated with a number from 1 through 1,000.

A Book's Worth a Thousand Numbers
An army veteran with a passion for sports begins a book series with two college peers.
by Michael Crawford
Tuesday, October 2, 2007
Marc Maxwell loves sports. He also loves writing. As a matter of fact, he loves both so much, he's combined his two passions into a book to help spread that love to sports fans and fanatics alike. He's not just stopping at one book either. With the help of two fellow sports lovers, he's only just begun the series called Sports By The Numbers (SBTN).
The books, each with original artwork by Val Laolagi, are composed of ten chapters containing blocks of one hundred stats in numerical order, Maxwell said. Each chapter begins with an introduction that highlights stories told bt the numbers contained in that chapter.
"The SBTN books are not just for the die-hard sports fan," Maxwell said. "Instead, they are for every fan that loves sports and wants to know more about their heroes..." Read More...
Love of Pi Sparks Sports Series
What exactly does pi have to do with the world of sports anyway?

Usually when people talk pie, the discussion naturally evolves into one of pastries, mom’s secret recipes, favorite flavor combinations and so on. However, a discussion with a local sports fanatic launched a sports publication series.
Marc Maxwell, Wiesbaden Education Center counselor, along with coauthors Daniel Brush and David Horne, published the first in a series of, initially, 12 sports history books Aug. 3.
During the summer of 2006, while in residency at the University of Oklahoma campus in Norman, while enjoying dinner and attempting to decompress from an earlier class session of psychological statistics, the trio conceived Sports by the Numbers.
University of Oklahoma Football: An Interactive Guide to the World of Sports is the first edition of the series, and the title is befitting, given the birthplace of SBTN.
“We were at the right place at the right time,” said Maxwell. “It was easy because Sooner football is legendary and the atmosphere around OU at that time of the year was consuming. I don’t know what idea we would have come up with if we were somewhere else.”
Unable to think of anything else, the group slipped back into discussion about a statement the professor made regarding pi. “Because pi never ends and never repeats you can find any sequence of numbers within the construct of the number.”
“We derived that while every number sequence can be found in pi, every number has a story as it relates to sports,” said Maxwell.
It is unclear whether the ribs, iced tea or the evening’s sports highlights steered the shift in conversation, but after an impromptu game of “what does this number mean to you,” the SBTN guys took on an additional project.
The book has 10 chapters with a foreword penned by OU’s football coach, Bob Stoops. Each chapter has a short OU football anecdote and 100 facts that add hue and contrast to an already robust athletic program. Moreover, the chapters are titled in a manner that may appeal to other people besides the average sports fan. For instance, Chapter 10 is “When You’re a Guy Named Joe and You Hire a Guy Named Bob, People Will Call You a Genius.”
“It’s formatted so that anyone can pick it up and begin reading from practically anywhere,” said Maxwell. “The framework can be used for any team around the world. We are setting our expectations on one day publishing this style of guide for possibly Manchester United.”
The bonus for the reader is that it’s an interactive guide that contains special combinations to unlock the locker located on the SBTN website, www.sportsbythenumbers.com.
Additionally, a part of the proceeds go to the Coach Bob Stoops Champions Foundation to improve the lives of children.
“After all, how can you say no to the kids,” said Maxwell.
Look for SBTN to release books on the New York Yankees, Major League Baseball and NASCAR in the spring of 2008, the authors said.

Monday, September 10, 2007
The Phanatic Magazine's Jared Trexler has agreed to author Sports By the Numbers: Penn State Football, the second book in a proposed 12-book series based on a statisical analysis of the country's top collegiate programs and professional franchises.
Due for an August 2008 release, Sports By the Numbers: Penn State Football will delve into the history of college football's prized program with the use of statistics and stories, joining to create a historical timeline of great players, games and coaches.
Mike Poorman, the current senior lecturer and director of alumni relations for Penn State's College of Communications, will write the book's foreword.
A former sports writer and editor, and long-time senior vice president for The Barash Group in State College, Poorman co-founded and has edited the Penn State Football Annual for the past 18 years. He joined the College as manager of alumni relations in 2004. His sports writing experience includes—associate sports editor, Centre Daily Times, State College; sportswriter, Lebanon (Pa.) "Mike is an excellent writer, stays well connected to the university and its sports programs, and has been around Joe (Paterno) and the program since his days at the Daily Collegian in the early 1980s," said Trexler. "He was the first person that came to mind, and I'm honored he has agreed to take this book to a level only his writing can."
Trexler was a member of Poorman's sports writing class as part of the university's Center for Sports Journalism in 2004.
The publishing company Savas Beatie, a well-known general history publisher that has already published such sports novels as Playing with the Enemy, and the first book of the Sports By the Numbers series detailing Oklahoma football, will publish the book chronicling the Nittany Lions.
Sports By the Numbers is a concept developed by co-authors and Oklahoma graduate students David Horne, Daniel Brush and Marc Maxwell, the partnership group responsible with the concept and for overseeing the production of each book.
The Phanatic Magazine's managing editor John McMullen was the first member of the staff approached about joining the team, and he will be writing the Philadelphia Eagles book for an August 2008 release. More information on McMullen's book will be posted when available.
