The number of seniors (18) on the Appalachian State Mountaineers football roster. On September 1, in front of 109,218 screaming fans in Ann Arbor who expected Michigan to open the season with a blowout against the Mountaineers, the two-time defending Division I-AA National Champions stunned the #5 ranked Wolverines 34-32. Julian Rauch, who is one of the seniors on the squad, made a 24 yard field goal with 0:26 left on the game clock to take the lead. Michigan got into position to kick a 37 yard field goal with 0:06 remaining, but senior safety Corey Lynch blocked the attempt to secure the victory. The offense was led by senior Kevin Richardson, who carried the ball 24 times for 88 yards, and senior Dexter Jackson, who made three receptions good for 92 yards and two touchdowns. The Mountaineers, who are accustomed to winning, though not at this level, gave 18 seniors on their squad a game they will never forget, and a beginning to their final season they could only have dreamed about.
