Serviceman Sam
Because I can’t personally be there with each family member as they go through this deployment, I needed someone that could. My initial idea was to have a stick-figure type character drawn throughout the guidebook to help motivate the family member each and every day. This stick-figure would be created to counsel and reassure the reader that they are not alone and that they will make it through this time away from their service member or military sponsor.
After communicating my desire for such a character to be developed, artist Val Laolagi created a wonderfully colorful character named Serviceman Sam. I couldn’t have asked for a better mascot for Surviving Military Separation. Serviceman Sam reflects the patriotism in all of us. Sam is brilliantly drawn and shows so much charisma. It is my hope that the reader, together with Sam, will survive the separation with flying colors. Red, White, and Blue colors to be exact.
